Home Shopping Network

Admittedly, the only reason I found myself at the Home Shopping Network website was because I saw the below necklace from Patricia Fields' jewelry line in a magazine and it fits the bill for the statement necklace of my dreams for fall. Of course, this necklace was completely sold out and I was pretty disappointed with the rest of her things.

So, after looking around a bit I found a few other "celebrity" jewelry lines of note from both Iman and even Tori Spelling - I had no idea!

Let's start with Iman - There were a few things from this collection that I liked (see below ), but ultimately I found it to be a little too "global chic" as the copy repeatedly suggests.

I did fine one necklace that had statement necklace potential but at $89.95, I had to pass. Still cute though...

Unbelievably, there are also lines from long-time YSL muse Loulou de la Falaise, Tina Knowles (which looks remarkably similar to Tori's line), and Susan Lucci.

But just as I was feeling discouraged, I found the Scoop NYC section and felt a little better. Yes, the prices for the typical high-end brands that Scoop carries are still a little steep, but HSN's trademark "flexpay" payment plan makes the prices dangerously easy to stomach somehow. I love layaway!

People's Best Dressed List

People Magazine's annual Best & Worst Dressed List hits news stands tomorrow so let's discuss...

First, you have the "obvious and obligatory" - Kate Hudson, Gwyneth, Charlize and SJP. There's not doubt that these ladies have exceptional style every year, but they've certainly all graced their fair share of Best Dressed Lists already...

Two that were probably expected but I was still delighted to see - Anne Hathaway & Eva Mendes. Anne has been such a force on the red carpet in the last year and it doesn't hurt certainly that she still manages to looks so incredible amidst all her personal turmoil. And, is Eva Mendes just the ultimate bombshell or what? After just seeing The Women over the weekend, I'm confident that she would look good in a trash bag, but nonetheless she does have a lovely and feminine style that I like.

Also included on the list: Rihanna whose style I find to be a little one-trick-ponyish, frankly...Fergie, who I think is cute enough and all but best dressed?....followed by Heidi Klum who I think looks better with no make-up at the park with her kids than she does on the red carpet. ...And, lastly, Michelle Obama, whose style we can expect to hear about endlessly over the next month, whether it's particularly interesting or not.

In my opinion, there were a few ladies who were woefully overlooked - Rachel Bilson, Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Carla Bruni, Nicole Richie, Julianne Moore, Selma Blair, Diane Kruger, Bee Schaffer, etc...and I'm sure I'm missing many more! Feel free to comment on who you think should have been included.

And, of course, I'll be interested to see who made the worst dressed list as well...I've heard that we can expect to see the missteps of Paula Abdul, Lucy Liu and poor Patricia Arquette who has never met a Worst Dressed List she didn't already know....

Target Update

Isaac Mizrahi has a really cute fall collection at Target right now and it looks like good basics - not at all like his usual stuff which can be so distinct and easily recognizable that you may as well just wear the Target shopping bag. This, of course, defeats the whole purpose of shopping at Target.

But I digress....I especially love the cashmere collection below - there's lots of colors available, I just really liked the winter whites... Cashmere Capelet - $149.99, Cashmere V-Neck Sweater $49.99 and Cashmere Turtleneck Dress - $99.

Also, on the Target horizon - 3 very exciting new guest designer collections coming up next month....

Jonathan Saunders will be the 13th GO International Collection due in stores on October 5th. I'm still smarting from the less-than-stellar Richard Chai collection back in August so I'm naturally wary of this sneak peak of the collection featured in NY Magazine. I must say, I do like the artsy-ness of it all, but I'm just not sure anything I see here has a place in my closet. We'll see.....

British handbag designer, Anya Hindmarch, will launch her collection for Target on October 12th and I'm predicting a serious frenzy for these. Here are a few from her fall '08 collection available now at Saks....Prices are $1,250, $1,195 and $460, respectively. Hence, the serious frenzy....

And last, but not least, fabulous footwear girls Kari Sigerson and Miranda Morrison will launch a limited-edition collection, Sigerson Morrison for Target, also on October 12th. I've always loved their shoes so this is exciting indeed.

Marc Jacobs Spring 2009

Much as I hate talking about spring/summer fashion before fall has even begun, we are in the midst of New York Fashion Week so I felt compelled to make at least one comment.

Rumor has it that Marc Jacobs has hit yet another home-run with his Spring Collection, which debuted on Monday. I think Vogue best summarized his 53 looks as "a mash-up to end all mash-ups" and they meant that in a good way, of course.

Personally, I like the cinched waists and chunky jewelry. And, I like the way he managed to work in a little tribute to his grunge roots here and there with the plaids. And, layers always make me happy so that works for me, too.

Whether you love it, hate it or just need to study it for a bit, one must admit it's fresh and provocative just like the skirt-wearing man himself.

Baker's Shoes

A quick one today to get back on track...

I came across these adorable shoes in a magazine recently and was surprised to see that such Chanel-esque shoes were actually from Baker's (and, guess what, they're now on sale for $59.99!). I've always had Baker's mentally filed away under super-vampy and impossibly inappropriate. For the most part, that categorization is still pretty accurate, but I was pleasantly surprised to see some really office-appropriate and fashionable options on their site, as well.

Of course, my bargain-loving heart (and feet) will always belong to DSW, but here are a few that caught my eye...

At 4 1/2", these shoes aren't for everyone but I liked the unique cut.

I love the bootie shoe - it's been around for a few seasons but it's taken me this long to accept them. They are so unique and, when worn right, so chic. Not sure these are for everyone either but I loved the button detail on the side. Nice touch.

Project Runway: Car Challenge

So far this season, I haven't been moved by any Project Runway episode enough to post about it. But, I was pleasantly surprised by last night's final runway outfits, especially after last week's boring drag queen challenge. (If a room full of drag queens can't make for a good time, then there's a problem, right?) My favorite by far was Korto's coat dress (above center) made entirely of seat belts. I felt exactly like the judges - I would love to wear this! But I have to admit that Leanne's little number (above left) was really different and fun and so she probably deserved the win...and, she really needed a win. My new favorite character though may just be Jerell - he's funny and seems nice and I like his work most of the time. His dress last night (above right), while not quite as interesting as Leanne's, was fun nonetheless and I loved the futuristic Jeston's vibe.

Just had to devote at least one post to the Runway while I'm feeling inspired....

In Defense of Fast Fashion

As someone who plans entire vacations around visiting H&M, it's safe to say that I'm an avid consumer of "fast-fashion". Fast-fashion outlets such as H&M, Zara and Forever21, have long irritated the world of high fashion with their manufacturing agility. With in-house design teams and tightly controlled factory and distribution networks, these companies can take a design from drawing board to store shelf in as little time as two weeks. Which means they can "knock off" high-end designers faster than they can get their own products in stores.

This recent article in the Financial Times details how designers are going to great lengths to create pieces from highly unusual or intricate materials that simply can't be duplicated. I guess I understand their artistic dilemma, but it leaves me feeling uneasy about my Forever 21 routine....

Then came this Fashionista post - Would you wear a knockoff? - and suddenly I'm feeling a familiar twinge of shame - Is my fast-fashion past time going the way of my tabloid habit? Will I have to now stuff my H&M finds in a Saks bag like I tuck my US Magazines into The New York Times? The whole thing can really deflate a fashion enthusiast who carries the utmost respect for high fashion, but who does not carry the wallet to match. Ugh.

So, today's post is a tribute to egalitarian fashion, as always! Forever 21, god love em', has some fun stuff for fall. Here are some favorites:

Belted Looks for Fall

As previously discussed, the statement necklace was definitely the most ubiquitous trend of fall fashion week spanning one end of the designer spectrum to the other. Another trend that was nearly as pervasive was the belted ensemble. Personally, I love this look in all its incarnations. There are the obvious benefits (finally, a waist!), but it can also add a touch of elegance or a touch of edge, depending on your mood, to any old outfit.

For example, Diane von Furstenberg (above photo) used her belts to accentuate her ultra-girly looks and feminine frocks. While, Brian Reyes (below photos) stuck to his uptown-luxe roots and pulled off a preppier look.

And, my favorite by far, was at BCBG Max Azria (below photos) - every look that came down the runway was cinched with a rugged brown leather belt which added a bit of an edge to a his super-toned down palette.

This look isn't hard to pull off - just take any old stand-by, cinch it with a belt and create a new look for fall. Lots of mid-level retailers have zeroed in on this trend, as well, so expect to find any variety that suits you out there.

Sweater Dresses - An Ode to Banana Republic

Unless you've been living under a magazine-deprived rock, you've probably noticed the major push Banana Republic has put behind their 30 year anniversary celebration. I, myself, have a special place in my heart for BR- it was the first "grown up" place I was able to shop where I didn't feel like a kid. I got my first suit there and it's where a sales associate many years ago opened my eyes to the possibility (and necessity) of a good alteration....The best part is that it's always been consistent - in a pinch you can always find something at "The Banana" (thank you, Jack McFarland!) and it won't be so overly expensive as to result in serious buyers' remorse.

All nostalgia aside, my current obsession with finding the perfect sweater dress for fall took me to the Banana Republic site where I found not one, not two, but FOUR really cute versions. See? This is what I love about The Banana.....

Striped Sweater Dress - $98.00
I love this dress, but I'm under no illusions that I can pull off all these horizontal stripes, but I really hope someone reading will buy this dress!

Shawl-collar belted sweater dress - $130
This is probably my favorite because the layering possibilities are endless! Love the cap sleeves and shawl collar - definitely looks more expensive than $130. Also, comes in black and teal but I'm sold on the grey.

Button Dress Sweater - $120
This is a little too 70's housewife for me, but apparently all things mod are back for fall. I do like the little details though - the buttons, the shoulder epaulets, etc...

Long-Sleeve Belted Sweater Dress - $120
Also a very good option...Classic crew neck and long sleeves make this just a really solid go-to option on days when you can't pull it together. You can't tell in this picture, but the color is a nice dark purple - something different and fun.

I've had a long standing obsession with clutches despite the fact that they just continue to stack up in my closet, never getting their "big night out on the town" that I always envision when I buy them. A beautiful clutch makes me feel like a sophisticated woman with places to go and things to do. Who doesn't want to feel like that?

Target + Thakoon = Love?

While most people are still processing the Richard Chai for Target collection, along comes news this week that the next Go International collection will be from the much-admired Thakoon label. Rumors about these Go International lines circulate like Elvis sightings (remember the Alexander McQueen rumor?), but this one's finally been confirmed by Target, which is very exciting. The collection is expected to launch in December and remain through January 2009 only.

As we know, these Target capsule collections are really hit-or-miss, but the thought of scoring Thakoon's signature vintage looks for less is exciting indeed. This is how they suck you in, right?

Investment Pieces - theory

A girl can't live on fast-fashion knock-offs alone....it's true. Every once in a while, you really have to force yourself to find that one special investment piece that will elevate your wardrobe and allow for a little "fudging" on the other stuff. While I live for a good bargain, a head-to-toe discount ensemble can you leave you feeling....well, cheap.

But, these obviously are not impulse purchases. It takes serious focus, dedication, planning and study. Sounds crazy, I know, but I like to think it's like playing the stock market - you research, you ask questions, you watch and, most importantly, you save your pennies for the day you make your move with confidence. When you're a girl on a budget, it's what you have to do.

Theory is a great line for just this type of thing....Not crazy expensive, they offer really well-made clothes that are simple and elegant and thus offer a wide range of uses. Meaning, you can wear it for years and thus justify a bigger price tag.

I really like this Free People Scottish Fringe Jacket ....it must be mine! No surprise that I love the stripes, but the fringe is totally adorable. I just think this is the perfect jacket for casual winter weekends to come....

J.Crew Final Summer Sale

Now's a great time to check out your local J.Crew store or jcrew.com for their annual end-of-summer sale. There's lots of great stuff for both work and play (which is always the beauty of J.Crew) so you can stock up for next summer....Just remember that all sales are final - no exchanges or returns - so you should be fairly confident of how J.Crew clothes fit you in general and shop now because things were disappearing from the website while I was looking around!

Note: I would have liked to have shown you some great summer sandals and flip flops but I couldn't bring myself to feature $40 flip flops as a bargain!

I thought this was a cute little top that would work with white pants for work or even long shorts for weekend wear. Even though it's drastically reduced, there are still plenty of sizes left as of today.

Good shorts are hard to find and these linen cuffed shorts look pretty cute. They also come in olive and off-white but I think the yellow are actually pretty fun for summer.

You should never pass up a good cardigan and this shirred and cropped version has great details. Also, still available in yellow and navy.

Granted, this color isn't for everyone but if you think it works for you, then what a great dress! I love the blouson sleeves and at this length it could definitely do double-duty as a tunic - the perfect vacation essential.

If you've got the legs for a mini, you should snatch this one up. It also comes in pink and grey, but again this bright green is really great, especially when paired with a neutral top like the one shown.

I can never get my hands on enough good t-shirts and this one is extra fine-gauge, which is always a plus. Comes in lots of other colors, too.

Like I said in my previous post, I'm happy that the statement necklace played such a big role in the Fall shows - seems like nearly every big designer took a stab at this trend - and this is definitely something I'll use to breathe new life in my old winter stand-bys. I love the sort of unexpected-ness of it over work wear and simple tops. And, how you want to do it is entirely up to you as designers showed a WIDE range of interpretations...from the totally architectural...(Clockwise 3.1 Phillip Lim, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang)

Fall Suit Inspiration

It's not often that this happens, but I've been totally inspired by a magazine editorial! Found in the August issue of Vogue. "Equal Opportunity" takes a fresh (and wearable!) approach to the masculine + feminine balance. It's the classic work wardrobe dilemma - you need at least a few good work suits for special meetings and job interviews and such, but it's hard to feel especially fashionable or current in them.

I think each seen here is impeccably styled. Most even manage to incorporate some Fall trends and still seem office appropriate. The first 2 up top - really love the super ruffly, violet top bursting through a tailored jacket....and the belted mint green vest is just perfect. (I am really crazy about LOTS of long sleeves under sleeveless outwear for Fall, but that's for another post...)

Personally, I'm delighted to see that the "statement necklace" is sticking around for Fall. Obviously, the necklace on the right is making a very bold statement indeed, but the point is well-taken - I just love the idea of wearing something dramatic over a classic button down...all the better if the button down is silk! And, more purple!

How chic are these 3-tone Marc Jacobs palazzo pants? I think very. And, the understated top pairs it down and softens it up at the same time. This is my silhouette inspiration for fall!

I'll start working on cheaper versions and let you know what I come up with soon...

Last Days of Summer - Nicole Richie

Like everyone else, I'm really sick of summer clothes. I'm already making my mental check-list of Fall purchases, but off-season shopping takes more self-discipline than I have - who wants to buy a winter coat when it's 97 degrees outside? I need the instant gratification of wearing my clothing purchases immediately.

So, I've been looking for a little summer shopping inspiration...something to get me through until the weather cools off a bit. This may sound crazy, but simply looking through Nicole Richie's summer traffic school pictures is the cure!! It's been a veritable fashion parade all summer long! I'm especially delighted by this most recent ensemble - she looks so cute! Of course, I would have to stop just short of the braids myself, but who can pull off the hippie-chic look better than Nicole?

Maybe all it will take is a new floaty camisole and some marked-down gladiators to make me feel new again until October? If only I had the black Balenciaga bag to match....

Richard Chai for Target - Now in Stores!

Just visited my local Target to check out the new Richard Chai for Target collection, which is in stores (and supposedly online as well, but I'm not seeing it yet) today. Unfortunately, the Target I visited didn't have all the pieces in the collection, but what they did have was only so-so.

I had really high hopes for the above color-block front tie dress and my Target only had 1 of the purple left and tons of the royal blue version, which isn't nearly as cute. I did however get the long cardigan shown above in blue...that was the only color left by the time I got there at 4pm! It's hard to tell in the picture but there is some ruching detail at the front which adds a little interest. The fabric is the perfect weight, fine gauge and super soft (95% cotton and 5% cashmere) so I know I'll get some use out of it this Fall.

I also got this ruffle front shirt shown under the black cardigan above. It's pretty cute, but not sure if it's really me yet and because it's so distinct-looking I'm sure it will soon be the shirt you seen everyone wearing and will never want to wear again.

The geometric print tank pictured under the vest above was sort of cute, but I just couldn't really see me wearing it ever so I passed. Had no use for the leather vests like this one either, but I'm sure some people will.

This is a good example of a piece I wanted to see that wasn't even in the store. Looks pretty cute, but I'll have to keep looking. There was also plenty of the corduroy Bermuda shorts but I didn't have any interest there. The graffiti printed cotton sundress didn't really appeal either. To sum it up: I guess I was sort of expecting things that represented Chai's minimalist reputation, but that's not really what I saw. It seemed very "young" to me; nothing I could use for work and play really.

What's all the fuss about? Richard Chai is a relatively new designer having just launched his own line back in 2004, but he's already an industry favorite. Most recently, his Fall 2008 Ready-to-Wear Collection scored rave review from Style.com/Vogue. His designs are frequently described as “modern” and “minimalist” and feature old-world detailing such as hand stitching, bias tapes and French seams. But the ladies really love Richard for his leg-elongating pants, fine-gauge knits and streamlined looks.

Macho Watches

For most of my adult life I've been on the search for the perfect watch. Among other things, it must be oversized, chunky, and sporty...but not so-sporty that it has multiple "bells and whistles" I'll never touch nor understand. From the first moment I spotted Chanel's J12 Collection of watches, I've been pretty much consumed with the idea of having one casually hanging from my wrist one day. That "day" is still just a dream at this point so I must continue my search for the affordable, normal-person version.

At one time, you almost had to exclusively shop the men's watches because women's weren't nearly as cool - they were just too...girly, of course. Now, however, I'm noticing that watches are more and more being dubbed as "unisex" and this has been good news in my search.

Toy Watch has been an excellent score in the men's-watches-for-women trend. These watches are very cool, sporty and relatively inexpensive due to the fact that they are, despite appearances, plastic! The above are from the Sport Chrono Collection, which is graphic and vivid and comes in lots of facing colors including hot pink, white and purple in addition to these. $250

These 2 lookers are from the Toy Watch Oversize Collection. The black has a nylon band and the steel is acrylic hence the relatively affordable price tag of $195.

These classics from Timex are also really close to what I have in mind. The stainless steal version is the Women's Sport Luxury 3 Hand for $100 and the second is essentially the same watch but with a white leather band and face for only $80.

These are from Kenneth Cole and I daresay this white Old School watch is my favorite! There's just something really fun about it and it's only $95. The other is called Time Will Only Tell and even though it's big and chunky, it's also pretty refined. Would be a great work wardrobe staple.

Gap Jewelry??

Not sure how I missed this, but apparently The Gap has started selling jewelry??...albeit in very short supply and seemingly in such a way that no one on the planet can possibly be aware of it. You would literally have to stumble upon it on the website to know it was there at all. Apparently, they introduced their first-ever jewelry line earlier this month on July 7th in adult Gap stores nationwide, but honestly I haven't been in a Gap store in months for all the same reasons why the rest of the country hasn't either.

Hopefully the sparse offerings aren't a sign that this initiative is short-lived - it would be interesting to see this develop, especially if the price point stays under $30. These days, The Gap needs to do whatever it can to get customers in the door and if jewelry can help, so be it. I thought the below necklace ($29.50) and bracelet ($19.50) were the cutest of the pieces currently on the site and, again, hopefully we'll see a bit more down the line.

On an unrelated note: As I was snooping around The Gap site, I came across this really cute leather satchel pictured below. It is a little on the expensive side at $150, but would I say that if it wasn't from The Gap? Not sure, but it's cute.

Tie-Front Blouses

Everyone seems crazy about the tie-front blouse these days - eluxury even has a whole "Trend Watch" section devoted to them, which is where I found the lovely Zac Posen version above. So, it's no surprise that nearly every retailer currently has some iteration of this trend in store...some better than others, of course. I actually have a few of these blouses hanging around my closet from the last time they were all the rage and I'm thinking these will look great with all the super-slouchy trousers coming out for Fall.

Edie Rose by Rachel Bilson

If you haven't already heard, frequent CS fashion favorite, Rachel Bilson, is just about to debut her new collection - Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans - within the next couple of months. However, I must caveat this all by saying that the line is being categorized as "junior sportswear", which usually means "probably will not fit" and/or "inappropriate for 30-year old woman". Nonetheless, I am excited about this and hoping for the best.

Women's Wear Daily is reporting that the launch will feature "15 pieces, including a sportswear mix of button-down tops, sweaters, jackets, T-shirts, dresses and two jeans styles — a straight leg and a skinny leg, both available in a dark wash. The entire line will wholesale between $19.50 and $49.50 per piece, which is in line with the DKNY Jeans range. The color palette is made up of mostly simple black-and-white, with a pop of yellow." The collection should start showing up in Macy's, Lord & Taylor and Nordstrom's in September. We'll keep a look out and report back with first impressions once it arrives, of course.

In the meantime, here's the few preview pictures I could find. Honestly, I'm feeling pretty underwhelmed by these pictures. With the exception of the jackets, which I would like to take a closer look at, nothing else really interests me. But, again, I'm going to stay optimistic that the other pieces we're not seeing here are really exciting.

Style Envy: Kate Bosworth

It feels like Kate Bosworth sort of just blossomed into a fashion fixture overnight. Even her Sunday-morning-walkin'-the-dog outfits are now scrutinized and dissected for the masses. What I like about her style is her incredible simplicity and her consistently streamlined silhouette. There's never any "fuss" to her.

Here are some of my favorite looks, though I have to admit I almost excluded a few that were clearly taken during her "scary skinny" phase....I had almost forgotten how bad things got for a while there...but the outfit could not be ignored!

Fun details can breath new life into the LBD! And, her black-on-black ensembles always look edgy, not scary.

Conversely, she does sweet white and lace well, too. I have to admit the headpiece worn with the flapper-inspired dress wasn't something I originally liked on Kate (and she's worn this more than once!), but I'm slowly coming around to it.

These are some of my favorite looks from Kate - I love a great black/white combo and she knows how to work this look without ever being mistaken for wait staff.

Here are some more colorful ensembles. ..always youthful and never over-the-top.

Prints are worn pretty sparingly. These are the types of prints I can actually admire because the colors are usually muted and sophisticated.

Style Lexicon: Ruching

I consider myself somewhat of a fashion geek. It's not enough for me to casually flip through a fashion magazine. I actually have to mark pages like a maniac so that I can carefully "study" them later. And, if there happens to be a word I don't fully understand - a sewing technique, a fabric variation, a color - well, then I have to get to the bottom of that. Not only do I need to know what the word means, I have to know how to pronounce it and what it actually looks like and feels like. There are more ridiculous ways to spend your free time, trust me....

So, every once in a while I'll share a tidbit I've learned or come across under the post title of "Style Lexicon: __________". Consider it your fashion "Word of the Day" because you never know when you might have an unexpected lunch with Karl Lagerfield and you'll want to know what you're talking about. So, let's begin....

Today's Style Lexicon Feature: RUCHING

Ruching (pronounced ROOSHING) is French and literally mean "to gather, ruffle or pleat". It's sometimes also spelled as "rouching". Basically, a strip of fabric or ribbon is gathered in a repeat pattern and as the gathering thread is drawn up the strip forms scallops or petals. Ruching is a labor-intensive, time consuming technique that, like many other art forms, is experiencing a resurgence in current fashion trends. French Style 101: La Redoute

For those not already hip to La Redoute, it's considered "France's favorite shopping source...for designer fashion, chic apparel, shoes, accessories and more- it's like shopping Paris wherever you are, whenever you want to." La Redoute has been in business for 75 years and is a household name in France with a long history in the fashion world. They even offer limited-time collections by world-class designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Viktor & Rolf, Jean Paul Gaultier and Ungaro.

Did I also mention that La Redoute is très cheap? So, I guess it's like the French version of H&M, only you can actually order online, which already makes La Redoute much less frustrating than our beloved. Granted, not everything on the site is what I would envision as the height of French fashion (why so many peasant skirts??), but there are definitely a few French-girl-staples to be had. Reptile Foot Fetish

One of my favorite fashion secrets is the versatility of a reptile-print shoe. The trick is that even though they're exotic and rich-looking, they are essentially "neutral" and thus can be worn with everything. Plus, we all know that when outfits are too "matchy" they look outdated and predictable. This is such an easy way to add a little chic-ness to any outfit that needs a "little something" and even to those that don't.

I've learned this lesson by enjoying three joyous years with the perfect pair of Nine West reptile print peep-toe heels that I happened upon at TJ Maxx. By now, these shoes have complemented nearly everything in my closet and have been resoled 3 times as a result. But, I'm starting to accept that it's time to say goodbye - a shoe can only take so much - and I'm on the market for a replacement pair. Here's my progress so far - feel free to weigh in on your favorites....and, no, the above Christian Louboutins are not an option, unfortunately.

Socialite Lauren Santo Domingo is a former editorial assistant at Vogue and vice president for Carolina Herrera. She bears an unmistakable resemblence to my favorite fashion icon ever - Carolyn Bessette Kennedy - so maybe that's why I'm such a fan of her look. Lauren is always very put-together and simply exudes "uptown elegance". There's no doubt that Lauren has the inside track to the world of high fashion and it certainly shows.

Also, she was recently married to the seriously rich Andre Santo Domingo in a lavish, and much-talked about wedding in Cartagena, Colombia.

Ikat Attack

I'll be honest, this ikat print trend has taken me a while to warm up to. At first, I wasn't even sure what "ikat" meant, much less how it was pronounced. (It's ē-ˌkät, by the way.) But since then, it's really grown on me. As long as it's worn in a very unstudied, casual way (a la Rachel Bilson above) you can really pull off a great "boho luxe" look, but I'm less thrilled with the louder and more "dressy" interpretation below on Katherine Heigel. It just feels a little too cartoonish for my tastes.

As a mother, I do occasionally have to shop for someone other than myself...really, I do...and, children’s clothing can be painfully expensive considering how fast the little people tend to grow.

Since everything Kate Moss wears seems to be a sign of "things-to-come", does this recent picture mean that BIG earrings are making a comeback? Admittedly, these she's wearing are really...really big, but as long as the earrings are super light-weight then no one gets hurt. I love this look so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I'm ashamed to say that I'm just now getting around to visiting Etsy.com even though I've been hearing about it for a while. I was so impressed with the site right from the start - clean and easy to navigate. I'm just starting to nose around the jewelry section and already I've found a few things that I really LOVE. This is a great site for one-of-kind, Anthropologie-esque pieces at a great price (and a fun way to sell your work for those creative types out there.) I'm just scratching the surface of the gazillions of things you can find on Etsy so expect another post about other categories soon.

For those of you not yet familiar with Etsy, it is a website that allows users to buy and sell handmade items. Similar to eBay, the company charges users a flat listing fee (of 20 cents per items), and takes a commission of 3.5% off all items sold. Etsy has a very slick Flash interface, which, combined with a smart taxonomy for listing items, makes it easy for users to find items, and helps sellers improve visibility. Items are listed under broad categories, such as Accessories, Clothing, Art, etc., and further listed under user-defined tags. Since its launch in June 2005, the site has continually added new widgets and features, and has seen corresponding growth. As of December 2007, the site boasts over 100,000 registered sellers, and has seen over 2 million sales.

Style Envy - Selma Blair

Selma Blair has such a simple approach to her style both on the red carpet and on the street, but there is always a twist...something edgy and different that makes her fun to watch. Even though she clearly has a penchant for the preppy, there is something offbeat about her interpretation. I always have thought that J. Crew (on sale, of course!) is a great place to shop for Selma's style.

Design*Sponge - Inspiration

Design*Sponge has become one of my favorite sites to visit for inspiration of every kind. It is a daily website dedicated to home and product design and features store and product reviews, sale and contest announcements, new designer profiles, trend forecasting and store/studio tours. In addition, Design*Sponge features a unique section dedicated to covering student design, national and international design shows.

My favorite part is that the site is updated constantly throughout the day (with an average of 6-10 posts a day) and I've subscribed to receive the e-mail updates when new posts go up. It's a great place to find DIY projects and inspirational people and things.

Hope you like it as much as I do!

Watercolor Prints

I have an unreasonable fear of wearing prints...No matter how lovely the colors or the print, I inevitably end up feeling ridiculous and just....big and frightening. But this new watercolor / impressionist print trend has inspired me to live a little. I think the artsy look gives it just enough of a sophisticated edge to make this trend totally wearable and still bright and happy.

This picture really doesn't do this adorable dress justice. I spotted this on a friend a few months back and it looked so great on her. The American Living line is Ralph Lauren in every way but name and you can really score some great classics for nearly nothing. As with all high-low partnerships, it takes a little digging but the bargains are unbeatable.

Payless Summer Shoes

As we all know, Payless is a funny thing. Sometimes, I visit and there is literally nothing I would wear if someone gave it to me for free. Then, there are other times where I buy 3 pairs of shoes at once. Well, this is a good time to visit your local Payless because the new arrivals look so incredibly cute. I actually spotted the pink Ruched Ballet Flats on a friend who was wearing them with skinny jeans and a t-shirt and when I heard she got them at Payless, I had to immediately check out what else they had. I'm sort of over wedge heels right now, but these orange Stacked Wedges would be such a great punch of color with white pant or even dark-colored jeans. The ivory Vogue Chopout Slings make for a perfect summer staple with shorts or long dresses and they are so Tory Burch-like that you would never guess they are only $19.99! And, I know the yellow Candy Glam Sandal may seem a little limited but I really like the graphic design on the sides and for $17.99 who cares if you only wear them once this summer?

Steve & Barry's RIP

I know I'm incredibly late to the game but I just this weekend was able to finally visit a Steve & Barry's while on vacation in the Boston area. Like every other woman in the country, I've been anxious to get my greedy little hands on Sarah Jessica Parker's Bitten line of clothing and accessories. Of course, I have read and heard numerous times how terribly underwhelming the experience is, but I wanted to see for myself. And, boy did I - it was TERRIBLE. There was literally nothing there! The racks were bare, the floor was covered in clothes fallen from hangers and the jewelry was in a tangled mess...all under gigantic posters of SJP promising "Fashion you can afford to love." So sad. And, this store apparently just opened in June! I actually forced myself to buy a pair of gold hoop earrings just out of respect for SJP....

So, I wasn't entirely surprised to read that Steve & Barry's has filed for Chapter 11 in Women's Wear Daily today, but still...the future was so bright. What happened? And, more importantly, will there be massive going-out-of-business sales that we should know about....at stores where there is actually merchandise, of course.

Target Dress

I was hesitant to post this dress when I first bought it because even though I liked it immediately, I wasn't sure how exactly I wanted to wear it. The above look with just the dress and black heels definitely wasn't right...I wanted a more casual/relaxed look to match the lightweight fabric. I was finally able to wear it today to a Fourth of July party to RAVE reviews! I paired it with the yellow Ann Taylor Loft cardigan mentioned a few posts back ("Cardigan Search") and it was a great combo - the bright yellow gave a little "life" to this understated grey color. And, of course, paired with my most fav gold gladiator sandals (also a Target find - See "Gladiator Sandal" post), it was a total hit. Lots of compliments. The whole outfit cost about $80! If you do like the dress and want to order it, just know that it runs really big so go a size down from what you normally wear. Another plus - very flattering cut for a post-baby body...or anyone struggling with an unruly midsection!

Style Envy - Rachel Bilson

I was just reading an article about Amanda Peet (whose style I also admire) in which she freely admitted, "I'm a born copier - I just copy the people I like." I also happen to subscribe to this lazy woman's approach to fashion - imitation = flattery, right? Never was this more true than with Rachel Bilson. She just seems to always look great. I love that her look seems so effortless and "thrown together", yet polished and always interesting. These are just a few of my favorite looks that I'm working on.

Cardigan Saga Continued

My cardigan dilemma may finally be solved! These photos are a sneak peek of the new Richard Chai for Target collection, which will be available in August. (Check out more in the August issue of Nylon.) I love the look of these cardigans, but we've been burned before by a pretty picture so we'll have to wait until August for the final judgement. We'll be outside the door when the store opens that day.

Claire's Boutique - RETRACTION

In the spirit of full disclosure...I just wore this bracelet for the first time today and was really bummed out to see that one wear resulted in a noticeable amount of scratches. It's almost like someone just scribbled this zebra print on with a Sharpie marker. I know it was cheap, but really........

Finding myself in rural Mississippi yesterday with time to kill, I found the nearest mall and proceeded with caution. The first store I spotted was the ubiquitous Claire's Boutique. (I think every suburban mall in America must have a Claire's Boutique, right?) While most merchandise is most- decidedly geared for the tween set (Hello Kitty, Hannah Montana, etc...), I was pleasantly surprised to find a few must-haves...at Claire's Boutique!! I thought the above bracelet was really cute for only $8.00 and there were a few other things I might have bought too if it hadn't been so crowded with 12-year-olds nervously waiting their turn in the piercing chair!

And, after visiting the Claire's Boutique site this morning, I found that they have a fun "Celebrity Style" feature and who's currently featured? My favorite Gossip Girl, Blake Lively! I'm not saying everything is a hit, but there are definitely a few surprises on there!

Cardigan Search

Is it just me or is the "perfect cardigan" an urban myth that continues to elude women everywhere? Now, there are plenty of cardigans out there, but I've come to the painful conclusion that they are all just slightly inferior in one way or another. Besides being the right length, color, fit and style, it's really the weight of it that makes or breaks the whole deal. "Paperthin" is how I would describe the cardigan of my dreams and so soft you want to wear it to bed at night.

But, alas, no such cardigan under $50 has yet been spotted. I did, however, recently purchase the above Ann Taylor Loft cardigan out of desperation this week. While the weight is perfect and the color is fun, I wish the sleeves were a bit longer and just...slouchier maybe? Nonetheless, its already filled a big void in the closet and I'm wearing it with everything.

Gladiator Sandals

I've been wanting to jump on the gladiator sandal bandwagon for a while now, but wasn't quite sure how to make this look work for me. Some of the more authentic versions just made me feel ridiculous! So, I was glad to stumble upon this pair of Isaac Mizrahi for Target gold gladiators. They are cute, comfy and cheap - the 3 C's!
